There are many convincing fraudsters who put forward an ever-growing range of “investments”, which offer attractive returns. The investments are usually non-regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, which means that there is limited protection for investors.
Fraudulent schemes may involve the sale of unregulated company bonds, plots of land, carbon credits, investment wines, forestry, storage space; the list is potentially endless. Some of these schemes are straightforward frauds, with no assets purchased despite the investor paying over their money. More often than not, however, they are more complex “Ponzi Schemes”, where enough assets are purchased to allow the fraudster to show some returns whilst building up the scheme, before disappearing, leaving insufficient assets to cover the investments and with some investors receiving nothing Some victims invest their own savings, whilst others are encouraged to use their accrued pension fund. Changes in pension regulations have allowed fraudsters to target peoples well-earned pension fund, normally using some form of broker.
David Wedgwood has acted successfully in the recovery of assets for the Official Solicitor and individuals, through prompt actions against the fraudsters themselves or the professionals who facilitated the schemes.
