Having been a doctor before he became a solicitor, practising in the clinical negligence field was a natural move for James. He joined our firm as a partner in March 2023 to work on high value medical negligence matters.
Dr James Piers is a solicitor, a medical doctor and a qualified barrister.
While his legal expertise is focused on spinal cord injury cases, he also has a special interest in cases that involve complex medicine and surgical errors, and the management of critically ill patients.
Working in the NHS for 6 years, his medical practice involved surgical fields, in particular orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery, and also included emergency medicine, cardiology and intensive care.
In his legal career, James is a highly experienced litigator with two of his cases progressing to successful trials at the High Court:
William Shortall v Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust [2014] EWHC 246 (QB)
Sheard v Cao Tri Do [2021] EWHC 2166 (QB)
Alongside his legal practice, James regularly gives training on medicolegal report writing to senior doctors wishing to become expert witnesses and he has been asked to speak on issues of medical law and patient safety at various professional conferences.
He also sits on the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine, Patient Safety Section and is involved in efforts to improve the delivery of safe patient care.
Clients who work with James find that his calm and focused approach instantly reassures them that they are in safe hands. His key intention is to not only achieve the best possible compensation payment for his clients’ life changing injuries, but to also put their minds at ease about their future financial stability.
