Rhiannon (aka Rhi) is part of the Senior Management team at South West London Law Centres leading their Campaigns, Policy and Community Work. Currently one of their key campaigns is temporary accommodation, this work is led by residents who have developed a Citizens Inventory which helps them identify hazards within their home and the Law Centre have provided the legal context.
Residents who have identified hazards within temporary accommodation are often told to stay there until a more suitable property is found, this leaves them at risk in unsafe housing. We have pushed the exention of Awwab’s Law to include temporary and asylum accommodation to protect residents. The campaign has also secured a number of wins such as bidding numbers for all homeless households on the Croydon Council waiting list and extra bathroom facilities in Wandsworth. Our approach shows that law and campaigning must work along side each other and this will become more significant as the Citizens Inventory is rolled out. |
